What is a Dental Bridge?

A bridge — a device used to replace missing teeth — attaches artificial teeth to adjacent natural teeth, called abutment teeth.

Bridges are either permanently attached (fixed bridges), or they can be removable.

Why do I need a Dental Bridge?

All of your teeth play an important role in speaking, chewing and in maintaining proper alignment of other teeth. Tooth loss doesn’t necessarily have to occur at you age, but if you do lose teeth they must be replaced to maintain proper function of your mouth. Fortunately, there are options for correcting tooth loss. Fixed bridges are applied by either placing crowns on the abutment teeth or by bonding the artificial teeth directly to the abutment teeth. Removable bridges are attached to the teeth with metal clasps or by precision attachments.

If you’re missing one or more teeth, you may be aware of their importance to your appearance and dental health. Your teeth work together for many daily functions from eating to speaking. With missing teeth, it’s difficult to do these things. Missing teeth can and should be replaced. Fixed bridges are a great way to restore your dental health and appearance.

What exactly is a bridge or fixed partial denture?

A bridge (fixed partial denture) is a device which fills the gap where teeth are absent. Fixed bridges are bonded into place and can only be removed by a dental professional. Removable bridges, as the name implies, can be taken out and cleaned. Fixed bridges offer more stability than their removable counterparts.

Why do I need a bridge?

Oral functionality and appearance are important reasons for wearing a bridge. A bridge helps support your lips and cheeks. The loss of a back tooth may cause your mouth to sink and your face to look older.

Dental health is the most important reason for a bridge. Teeth were designed to complement each other. Unusual stresses are placed on the gums and other oral tissues when teeth are missing, causing a number of potentially harmful disorders.

Increased risk of gum disease has proven to be one of the worst side effects of missing teeth and can be minimized with a bridge.

Missing teeth can cause speech disorders as they are used to make many of the sounds we use to speak clearly.

How is a bridge attached?

The attachment procedure usually takes two or three appointments to complete. At the first appointment Dr. Edland will prepare the teeth on either side of the gap by removing a portion of the enamel and dentin.

Since the bridge must be fabricated very precisely to ensure correct bite and to match the opposing tooth, impressions of the teeth are taken and sent to a lab where the bridge will be constructed.

Fixed bridges are typically cemented to the natural teeth next to the space left by the missing tooth. A pontic (false tooth) replaces the lost tooth. Crowns, which are cemented onto the natural teeth, provide support for the bridge.

What materials are used?

Bridges can be constructed from gold alloys, non-precious alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. Porcelain is often bonded to either precious or non-precious metal.

How do I take care of my bridge?

A strict regimen of brushing and flossing will keep the bridge and surrounding teeth clean. This is of critical importance as the bridge relies on the neighboring teeth for support.

The entire staff at Edland Dental practice are top notch, which is very reflective of Dr. Edland himself. When I left the office after my 6 month check-up this week I felt like my teeth were sparkling. Kim the hygienist always does a thorough job cleaning my teeth. I would highly recommend Edland Dental practice to anyone seeking quality dental care: from routine cleanings, to fillings and crowns, to bridge work. I have had to make use of all of these services at this dental practice and would rate each service received and the staff providing it 5 star. They are the best.

My previous dentist had retired and I chose Dr. Edland's office from excellent reviews I have heard from others. When I walked in the office I knew I was going to continue with Dr. Edland's office for ALL of my dental needs. All who work there is a ray of sunshine! They are very warm and treats you like family. When you call the office you will speak with Liz. You can see the smile on her face by just talking with her. She will spend all the time needed to make sure your experience is a great one. When you walk into the office you immediately feel the warmth and a positive welcome. As I was walking to a room Dr. Edland greeted me and welcomed me to his practice. I immediately felt comfortable. Edie, Dr. Edland's assistant, is so kind and caring. She took a special interest in our conversation makes you feel at home. Dr. Edland is very dedicated to his practice, very knowledgable, and gives you suggestions if you would like to improve your appearance. I was very happy with Dr. Edland suggestions and I will be seriously taking them into consideration. There is no need for anxiety going to Dr. Edland as he is very gentle, kind, and confident. His office is up to date with the latest equipment and takes extra measures to keep the office safe from Covid. Julie, Dr. Edland's Hygentist really did thorough cleaning and I could not be happier with her service, kindness and assistance in continuing good hygene practices. Dr. Edland is very fortunate to have such wonderful people working for him. I cannot express enough how happy I am with everyone and their service. I will look forward to my next office visit!

After my dentist retired, I needed to find an honest and experienced dentist that I could trust to tell me the truth about my teeth. I am so lucky to have found Dr. Edland. His office staff welcomed me with open arms, they were compassionate and courteous. My first visit was an emergency call. Dr E actually called me after hours to follow-up and advise. He is excellent, friendly, and he does the work himself unlike some other dental offices. I have since been back for a crown and it was the best experience I've ever had with a dentist. My wife has since switched to Dr Edland and I would strongly recommend him to others.
